History of the Department of Oncology of the Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University
The day of foundation of the Department of Oncology of the Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University is June 29, 1972, when, at the request of Professor S.N. Nugmanov and on the basis of the decision of the Academic Council of the Alma-Ata State Medical Institute, an order was issued by the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan “On the organization of a department for teaching oncology to students of a medical institute.”
At that time it was the first student’s department of oncology on the territory of the USSR, and only in 1974 the order of the Ministry of Health of the USSR was issued “On the organization of departments of oncology in medical universities of the Soviet Union.”
From 1972 to 1974, the department was based at the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology (founded in 1960), and from October 1974 to May 2017, the Almaty Cancer Center (formerly the City Oncological Dispensary of the city of Almaty) was the clinical base of the department.
The organizer and the first head of the department (from June 1972 to May 1980) was a prominent scientist-oncologist, organizer of the oncological service in Kazakhstan, the first director of the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology, Honored Doctor of the Kazakh SSR, Professor Saken Nugmanovich Nugmanov (1918-1980). From 1972 until the end of his life, Saken Nugmanovich combined the position of head of the department of oncology and director of KazNIIOiR. In 1969 SN Nugmanov published the capital monograph “Epidemiology of Malignant Tumors in Kazakhstan”, which marked the beginning of the development of a new scientific direction for Kazakhstani medicine: “Epidemiology of Malignant Neoplasms and Development of the Basics of Organization of Anticancer Control”.
Also, during the management of the department by S.N. Nugmanov, two more scientific directions were formed: “Development of new, improvement of existing methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the most common tumors” and “Scientific foundations of medical radiology and development of methods for controlling the radiosensitivity of tumor and normal tissues”, which predetermined the further long-term work of more than one generation of employees of the department.
Among the first employees of the department were Associate Professor L.K. Barsova, who from 1980 to 1985 headed the department, until 1999 was the head teacher, the first assistants – candidate of medical sciences Kulanbaev M.K., who, after defending his doctoral dissertation, moved to the post of professor of the department of general surgery of the Alma-Ata State Medical Institute, as well as candidates of medical sciences M.T. Rakhmetov, K.T. Isina. The first laboratory assistants of the department were Mukatova B., Stebaeva A.
Since 1974, the staff of the department has been replenished with new employees: Associate Professor AE Esenkulov, Ph.D. Maltseva N.V., Nigai N.A., oncosurgeon, Ph.D. Khozhaev A.M. From 1995 to 2013, Professor B.V. Monakhov, a full member of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), a recognized specialist in the field of clinical chemotherapy and tumor prevention, worked at the department.
From 1985 to 2001, the department was headed by Academician of the Academy of Preventive Medicine of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Khairzhan Abisatovich Abisatov, a representative of the Moscow School of Surgical Oncology. Professor Abisatov Kh.A. together with Professor Esenkulov A.E. for the first time in the republic in 1994, a two-volume textbook on oncology in the Kazakh language was published for students of medical institutes (the second edition was published in 1999).
In the period 1980-1990-ies at the department worked: Nsanov Zh.K., assistant, after graduating from the ASMI in 1986 passed clinical residency at the department, was the head teacher of the department, Baltabekov N.T., Esenkulova S.A. after graduating from graduate school, having defended candidate dissertations, they worked as assistants, then as assistant professors.
From 1996 to 2017, a thoracic oncosurgeon of the highest category, assistant Amangaliev Zh.A. worked at the department.
For the first time in the republic at the department since 1974, pediatric oncology was taught to 5th and 6th year students of the pediatric faculty. The first teacher of pediatric oncology at the department on the basis of KazNIIOiR was Associate Professor Nigai Nikifor Andreevich (from 1974 to 1993). From 1993 to the present day, pediatric oncology has been taught by Professor Zhumashev U.K.
From 2001 to 2003, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Arzykulov Zh.A., Director of the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology (2000-2011).
From 2003 to 2016, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Kaidarov Bakyt Kasenovich.
Since 2016, the department is headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences (2010), Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2017) Kaydarova Dilyara Radikovna.
Currently, the department has a close-knit professional team devoted to their work: professors A.A. Khozhaev, U.K. Zhumashev, associate professors S.A. Esenkulova, A.K. Dzhakipbaeva, T.T. Sadykova, G.S. Igisinova, Nurmanov S.R., Baltabekov N.T., Candidates of Medical Sciences Aitakhunov M.L., Sabirov K.U., assistants Afonin G.A., Amanbekov N.A.
In 2013, the department was divided into 2 independent departments: for teaching undergraduate students and internship and residency students.
At the beginning of the new academic year 2016-2017 (in September 2016), the rector of KazNMU made a decision to merge the two departments, the departments were merged, and the combined department became known as the Department of Oncology.
Since April 2016, the main clinical base of the department is the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology, teaching oncology to students and interns is also carried out in several health facilities in the city of Almaty (city polyclinics, medical centers).
Currently, the department teaches oncology to undergraduate students in the 4th and 5th years, 6th year interns in the specialty “General practitioner” as well as residents. The educational process is organized in accordance with the equirements of the State Educational Standard and is as close as possible to practice.
The department is actively working in all areas: scientific, educational, methodological, educational, clinical. Positive results have been achieved in all areas, successes have been noted by the administration of KazNMU, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
